On Friday 1st July a group of our Year 9 students worked with writer Julie McKiernan in our Community Classroom with the Writing the War group.  The group have been writing pieces in response to written artefacts from WW1, e.g. posters, military tribunal documents, advertisements and obituaries.  The best work was selected and included in a booklet which is being sold to raise funds for the SSAFA (Soldiers Sailors Airmen and Families Association) and was launched on the day.

The event started with a brief explanation about the writing course, followed by refreshments and a chance to look at the stimulus material before our students read extracts from the booklet. St Joseph’s Players then performed some humorous WW1 monologues. Finally, there were more readings from the booklet and a chance to talk to the writers and buy the booklet.

Julie contacted us after the event to say the following, “I just wanted to say thank-you again for supporting the Writing the War event last Friday and to thank your pupils for reading the extracts from the booklet. They were a credit to the school not only in the professionalism of their readings, particularly at short notice and in front of a much bigger audience than they expected, but in their general behaviour. They were attentive and polite and many of those attending commented on their feedback forms how good it was to see them there being so interested in, and respectful of, the subject matter.”
