Year 9 Options

Every student will study Maths, English Literature and Language, Combined Science, Religious Education OR Music and Core Physical Education. Additionally 3 other subjects must be chosen, one each from the columns below. All students are required to select at least one EBAC subject which are highlighted in Red to show breadth of study.

Students who wish to achieve the English Baccalaureate must choose either Geography or History and French or German as part of their option choices.

Students wishing to study a Modern Foreign Language at GCSE must still be studying the Language of their choice currently in Year 9. If opting for German GCSE students will be directed to take Foundation or Higher and must select this course in the appropriate column, all students wishing to take French GCSE will be following the Higher Tier.

Students who have already embarked on GCSE Music will be expected to continue these students instead of RE, as such this does not form part of the options process.

Whilst every effort is made to accommodate student choices, these are not guaranteed.


All students follow compulsory courses of study in the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education and Religious Education. In addition, all students will study components of ICT and access Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Development.

In order to enable students to develop in areas where they have specific interests and abilities, most will choose a further three options, details of which are outlined in the booklet below.
